Angelic murmurs across

Orlando

Original motion picture soundtrack Varese Sarabande Records

Reviewed by Joseph Morris

For fans of film scores, there's a compact disc soundtrack available for Orlando, the gender-switching-over-400-years pageant film exploring sexism, social conventions and poetry, which is now playing at the Centrum in Coventry.

Its 14 tracks cover most of the film's musical background and interludes, tilted toward the male-Orlando half (track 10 is "A Change of Sex"). The tone of most of the music, co-written by David Motion and the film's director, Sally Potter, can best be described as "ethereal." There are a couple of exceptions, but overwhelmingly, the orchestrations include calliope-toned organ music, synthesized wind and violin sounds, and "angelic" sighs, moans and humming. This background style seems to be most popular in advertising these days: many of the tracks sound like the music for Volkswagen luxury sedan or AT&T"iPlan" commercials.

Don't attempt to listen to the soundtrack before seeing the film; the album doesn't stand on its own. Hearing it after the fact will bring to mind pleasant images from some of this colorful film's dramatic scenes.

The most commercial and hyped melody, "Coming" performed by Jimmy Somerville,

Borders Book Shop

the openly gay British singer late of Bronski Beat, closes the film. Somerville is suspended overhead as angel-with-harp, and the image segues into the credits as the song continues. It is also the last cut on the CD, which is just as well: his falsetto voce and the dance beat style is so different from the rest of the soundtrack as to be jarring. It's sort of the film's anthem, proclaiming "Neither a woman, nor a man/ We are joined, we are one/ With a human face."

All of the other selections are instrumental (overlooking the angelic murmurs) with the exception of the first cut, "Eliza," which was also sung by Somerville as he plays coxswain on Queen Elizabeth's boat.

The film's soundtrack did its job by neatly matching musical style and mood with the visual image of the period and the scene. However, this recording serves more as a musical tribute to Orlando's love infatuations than an aural documentary of the film. Most of the selections on the album reflect foppish and prissy England; we are denied the interludes of Cossack and Arabian culture that appeared on screen.

This recording won't become a musical classic like the Star Wars or Lawrence of Arabia soundtracks, but it does have its moments. I see it falling into a mediocre category, sort of this decade's version of Barry Lyndon-nice when you pay attention to it, but most of the time it sits on the shelf.

Spaces

The artist-run, alternative space gallery has announced a Call for Entries for Creating in Crisis: Making Art in the Midst of

AIDS. The exhibition will be shown at the gallery in the spring of 1994 and will include artists from across the country.

Creating in Crisis will explore how the presence of AIDS, as illness, social and political phenomenon, has affected the creation of art and its producers. The exhibition will be equally concerned with public, private, and political responses in all media. The curators are Jeffrey Grove (Cleveland), Micheal Milligan (Columbus), and Dan Postotnik (Cleveland).

Artists should send documentation of work (slides, film, video, or manuscript), and a SASE for return of materials to: Spaces, 2220 Superior Viaduct, Cleveland, OH 44113. The deadline is September 14. Call 621-2314.

Cuyahoga Valley Heritage Fest

The Eighth annual festival takes place this weekend in the Cuyahoga Valley Recreation Area. Tonight, Aug. 20, the 7:30 concert features Alex Bevan, Etta Baker, Eddie Pennington, McCoy Tyner, and others. On Saturday, August 21 the festival is open from noon to 6 pm followed by a concert that starts at 7:30. The headliner act is Arlo Guthrie and his family band Xavier, presenting a program of traditional American music. The opening acts are Mollie O'Brien and Kansas City blues and jazz performer Jay McShann. The festival is also open on Sunday, Aug. 22 from noon to 7 pm. During the day the stages will be filled with jazz, blues, folk, bluegrass, African, Irish musical and other performers. The crafts area will have continuous demonstrations of outstanding American traditional crafts from 16 craft artists. There's lots of old-fashioned food, too. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on; alcohol is prohibited. Admission to the festival is $5 for adults; the Saturday concert has a $10 adult charge (discounts for seniors and young'uns).

The festival is at the Special Events Site in the valley. Take I-77 to I-271 and head east. Get on Ohio 303 traveling east; when you reach Riverview Road, turn south and drive for about four miles to the site.
